    The best water container

These containers are great. I had several water containers since 2017. A few days ago I decided to change out the water. My containers are stored on the back porch and I live in Mesa, Az. so they are exposed to a lot of heat but no sun. Anyway all but two were Saratoga water containers. When I pulled those two out to empty they had sever cracks at the top and I had to trow them away. All my Saratoga containers were just fine and I had them stack two high. I recommend these water containers and I am speaking from experience.

    I’ll be getting more soon.

I’ve filled mine with artesian well water, and a half teaspoon of bleach, sealed them tight and stacked them two high for now in a corner of the basement. I hope I never need them but feel secure that should the water main rupture again, I’ve no worries about having water besides what’s in the hot water heater and toilet tanks!Very likely to get 4 more as I go through a 5 gallon jug each week for coffee and drinking and cooking. If the water goes out again, I’ll need more than that for washing and doing dishes, so another set of 4 will be added comfort.Oh, these are great for carrying, very tough and the bottoms are designed to nestle with the top of the jug below it for secure upright stacking. The have smooth sides and will be slippery on their sides so plan on them being upright. I also bought a spout to go with them but have not tested it yet. The air vent caps cover a non-vented spud, so should there be need to use the spout, I might have to drill a vent hole in the spud. No biggie. The main caps have tamper-proof ratchet rings on the lids that click when you put them on and snap off (like bottled water from the convenience store). I do not have security concerns so cut off the rings as I needed them to seal at the well (20 miles away) and not leak during transport, and be openable for the addition of bleach once home again. I have pretty good hand strength, but found it necessary to use the wrench to torque the lids down for a secure seal. Get a wrench! You’ll want it air tight so bacteria doesn’t get drawn in during barometric changes. There’s no way to eliminate the air pockets created by the nesting ridges on the top, so when you seal it up for storage, wrench those lids down TIGHT!

    Great water storage containers

Shipping was excellent, containers are of great construction, they are stackable which makes them easy to organize!! I ordered 6 more immediately after receiving them and will buy more in the future. I highly recommend them.

Order them! Tx, LA, FL special attn

Once filled they are about 42 pounds. A good weight to carry or move for the older person if need be. They stack well. We live in Texas and the hurricanes tend to like us. So, Louisiana and Florida……something to consider or anyone else. :)Deb (the wife)

    Glad I have them.

I bought a set of 8 and yes they did have a plastic odor, (they are plastic) I rinsed mine with hot water and a heaping tablespoon of baking soda, then rinsed again and let dry. Smell went way down. Filled with tap water and one teaspoon _regular_ bleach. I’ll leave the water in for 1 year and then change it. When I refill these I will put some water in with a sanitizing level of bleach to sanitize the jug, empty it, cover the lid with paper towel and let dry for a day, then refill with tap water and add one teaspoon regular bleach and store again. Adding that teaspoon of bleach kills any pathogen in the water and the bleach quickly degrades, you won’t even be able to smell it in a few days but as long as your bleach is in there, your water is clean and no bugs can grow, provided your lid is tight and you store properly. This process is much like canning, everything has to be clean and sterile going in. This is easier though because the bleach does most of the work for you.If you don’t have good hand strength, get a wrench, these lids do require some effort to get then tight enough to seal but the do seal. I tested each one by tipping over on it side and pressing down on the container to build some pressure and I had no leaks. There is more to storing water then you think, read up on it, you have to do this correctly or you can set up a bateria farm in your water jug and then you don’t want that.If you are not concerned about the tampering, take it off the tamper-evidence ring, the lids tighten down easier without it, it is not necessary to seal the jug, it is just a tamper-evidencing device that will only work once anyway. The rings break right off.

    Pretty useless without the wrench

These are good, but not great. I don’t like how you REALLY HAVE TO CRANK on the caps to close them tight enough to the point that they won’t leak. And to extend on this gripe, I don’t like how there is obstructed access to the cap due to the shape of the container. There is a wrench that can be used specifically on these caps (some of these jugs actually come with one for free) which should solve these problems. For my case I just used some 4″ wide-jaw channel locks (duct tape covering the teeth), to get the caps on tight, but this did chew up the caps pretty good. Eventually I’ll plan to order the proper wrench and possible some new caps. Another problem is the toxic plastic smell inside the containers. I rinsed each one out with a bleach/water solution and this seemed to have gotten rid of most of the stink. One final gripe is the delivery on these containers seemed to take longer than usual, but at least it was free.

Needs a different lid but great product.

Very well made, sturdy product. My only beef is that once you lock down the lid, it appears that you have to cut the band under the lid to remove them. I guess that’s to just show they haven’t been tampered with? However, that part is now no longer usable. Would prefer something like the top of a Scope bottle where you have to press the edges to open. It would not be as tamper proof but I can’t imagine someone sneaking into my house or garage to poison my water.

    Exactly what I was wanting!

Update: Amazing customer service! I recently had an issue with one of the caps leaking, so I contacted the seller, and it was recommended that so long as these were for personal, at home storage, and I had no worries of anyone tampering with them, that I remove the extra seal (they are just like larger versions of lids you see on milk jugs) and once doing so I was able to get the cap twisted on much tighter, thus no leaks whatsoever. Do not hesitate to purchase these!!! They are sturdy, with large openings, tight seals, and even when filled they are still easily portable. I see these lasting for many many years. This seller is quick to respond, extremely courteous, and shipping was excellent.

    Well designed water storage container

These are great water storage containers (Samson Stackers). Saratoga Trading Company was prompt in shipping and answering my questions. I primarily use these for storing emergency water and the stacking design saves a lot of floor space. I also wanted a water container for canoeing and camping trips that could take a lot of abuse. The thick sides and recessed mouth and vent cap provide more protection from banging around then other designs. However, the recessed design does mean that it’s harder to get the last few ounces of water out. The vent cap is a screw down design which I find much more reliable than the typical plug design. These jugs come with a standard 70mm cap and a spigot cap is available if you search a bit.

You really should show the dimensions on which way they consider height versus width

Good sturdy containers but will not fit my application. The dimension says they are 10 in tall but did not mention which way they considered tall. They really should have a picture showing the dimensions for people that have to worry about them.

    Better now than too late.

Arrived as promised. Currently in use and stored away for some sad (hurricane) day. I just wished buying 8 of these was enough to merit a free spigit and wrench. I can open them barehanded but my wife can’t. The lids do go on very tight and haven’t leaked in the short time I’ve had them. The jugs themselves are great though. They stack upright very nicely and the handles feel strong and comfortable. I would’ve given 5 stars but no spigot or wrench means a 1 star deduction.

    Beware of leaks…

Filled a couple to test. Both seemed like they could handle the weight. The handle didn’t budge for me…pretty sturdy for lugging 5-gallons around. The main ‘concern’ is the leaks from the cap. Fine if the containers are standing upright, but as soon as I laid them on their sides, the leaks began. I may need to find some compatible rubber o’rings, but for the time being, these will be stored upright.

Please just sell the spigots with the units!

I will change this rating if I get a response or a solution to my issue. I may be returning these. Update: Very satisfied with my phone contact with company service representative. Rating changed from 1 star to 4.For the price, I would have expected spigots. I think there is an issue with website presentation because after I was able to reach customer service they stated that the spigots were paired for sale with the item, however I was not able to find it. There are no directions–to use a spigot, if I had one, do you punch out or drill out the hole in the cap? Once finished you would need a another sealed cap, right? Update: I found out that they sell a spigot/cap combo. I have a question about the design: Why would you need a locking cap (one use only) for household use? You need a pliers to open the vent cap, and you have to punch or drill your own hole.Reaching the company was difficult. I would not have thought to click on “See Details” to find company information. Hey Amazon how about something simple like “Contact seller?” without all the silly drop downs that never seem to cover the issue in question.

    Sturdy and stackable water container

Great product, conveniently stackable. The only problem is that it has a strong inside odor, even after keeping water in it for a while. So I ended up using it for emergency washing water, not for drinking water as I was afraid it would taste of the odor.

Great product & superior customer service!

The containers themselves are heavy duty. The design allows for a stackable storage that takes up as little space as possible. The lids lock once on, forcing someone to remove the safety seal to open it. Great for when your away from your stash. There was an issue with the time it took to ship, though it was a warehouse issue, the Ready Store took complete ownership and made it right! It’s hard to find a business willing to step up and treat customers like customers. I will definitely do business with the Ready Store again!Recommendation: since the caps lock and the safety seal needs removed when opened, I’d recommend also getting the water purifier drops for much longer storage. The caps are reusable but safety seal will be gone.

Better than expected. I had few of the problems others list.

I ordered these somewhat cautiously, as there are a number of reviews citing issues. I figured I’d give them a try.I bought the 60 gallon (12 containers) package and after reading reviews with complaints about smell, plastic-quality questions, lid seal, and needing to buy expensive accessories, I am very happy to report:- Little to no smell. If I really take a deep snort with my nose jammed in there, yeah I kind of smell plastic. But it’s very faint. Nothing like what some other customers reported (and I’m not knocking their reviews, I’m sure theirs smelled). No stronger than a new plastic water bottle, and I’m going to wash/bleach them out anyway, so this was a non-issue for me.- Lids. Some customers report not getting lids (though I also see review updates indicating good customer service later supplying them). Mine had lids, although they were deep in the box in a separate envelope, so it may appear at first that yours don’t have any.- Plastic quality. Some customers called out missing or cryptic markings on their containers. Mine are stamped all over with HDPE, the “2” in the arrows, all that BPE-free good stuff. I have no concerns about the plastic (and the containers are very sturdy).- Accessories. Mine came with a wrench for the lids! I was very happy to see this, especially as I didn’t see it mentioned in the product description. I wonder whether, after complaints about lids, the company started being more diligent about including them and also threw in a wrench for free? But that’s conjecture. Also, when I ordered these the delivery estimate was 2-3 weeks. They came in 5 days! Very impressed with this product and the service so far. Now, in fairness, I haven’t filled these yet. So if there are issues with leaking, I will definitely update the review. But between the information about cutting off the collar on the lids, and the bonus wrench they included, I’m confident all should work well. UPDATE: Out of my 12, one had a tiny leak no matter how I tried to seal the lid. A couple others leaked when I sealed them, but by removing the lid and then re-wrenching it on I was able to get a perfect seal with no drips. The one container just leaked no matter how I secured the lid. It was just a small drop every couple seconds when I inverted the container, but this means the water isn’t perfectly sealed so it’s a concern. I’ll see how that water is compared to the others when I open them. Also, the vent opening (the small spout on the rear with the small white cap) leaked on a few, and on a couple I used plumber’s tape on the threads to get a better seal on the vent. The vent holes took a lot of work to drill out. There is a lot of plastic down in that neck, and of course all that debris has to be cleared. This was pretty easily accomplished with the repeated soaping/bleaching/rinsing I was planning to do anyway, but just to say I was surprised how thick that plug was.I do agree with others that instructions would have been useful, but there’s enough information online that I think I’ll be okay.UPDATE Here are the steps I used on each container, in case this helps anyone:1. Drill out the vent hole. As mentioned, this takes some doing unless you have an amazing drill.2. Rinse container with warm water. This should get rid of much of the plastic debris from drilling.3. Add more warm water and a drop of antibacterial dish soap. You don’t need much! On my first few containers I used much more soap and had to rinse many times because it foamed up so much. Seal the soapy water in there and shake vigorously for several seconds to clean thoroughly.4. Rinse out all soap. If you have a sink with a sprayer, that will come in super handy: put the contained upside down to make sure you get it all out.5. Optional: Add some cold water, seal and shake, pour into a glass and sip. Did you get all the soap out? :-)6. Add 1 teaspoon (5ml) of bleach to 1 quart water, pour into container, seal and shake vigorously for several seconds.7. Rinse thoroughly.8. Optional: Shake up some more cold water in there and taste it. Should taste great.9. Fill partially with cold water, add 1/2 teaspoon bleach, continue adding water until full. The bleach is to preserve the water and prevent algae/bacteria. Ready.gov recommends 1/8 tsp bleach per gallon, which is 1/2 tsp for 4 gallons. I stuck with this for my 5 gallons. On other sites I saw as much as 1tsp and as little as 1/4 mentioned for 5 gallons.10. Seal and store, somewhere dark that won’t get too warm. Label with a Sharpie: Date filled and amount of bleach added. One final note, I did order this for $9 because I knew I’d need a spigot. I highly recommend this one accessory.https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01DFW90GY/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

    Great For Water!

These were recommended for water storage and glad we bought them. They are food grade for water…look at the bottom to see the symbol. Also treat the water with a purifier tan or other liquid too before storing. Don’t forget to to clean them out first. They are sturdy with no leaks. I may purchase more. Thanks!

OK for storage, could be better overall

Update to the review which follows: I’m raising my review by one star simply because the seller (mfr.?) took the time to reply here, which you don’t often see. Disclosure: I also received the items he mentioned in the comment below (free spigots). They are of the same design as those I purchased, a little lightweight but functional. Assuming any of the stuff I criticized in my review is improved on future models of this container, they are worth looking at. Mine are still in deep storage after a few months and holding water for potential emergency use.Original review: Overall I’m (only) OK with these. I bought a 4-pack of 5 gallons each, received today, filled with water and put in storage. They do stack well (I’m only going 2 high) and they work as intended to store water for the long-term. They seem rugged enough to handle everyday use for camping, etc. as well. I also bought the separate spout (8 bucks) which works OK also. But I took off a couple stars for the following reasons. Each is a fairly minimal complaint but taken together I think they are reasonable to mention.1. Advertised as BPA-free in the Amazon listing, this is not noted on the container anywhere nor on the box they arrived in. There are numbers and other info molded into the plastic, why not a notice about BPA as well to give the customer reassurance and help with info later when someone looks at these as a possible source of drinking water. I used a marker to write “BPA Free” on the top of each container. These do smell like plastic when new. I rinsed them with vinegar and then fresh water which helped, before filling for storage.2. There was no instruction or data sheet enclosed. Not everyone will realize you can (optionally) drill a vent hole under a small white cap at the rear to aid in pouring water (I did not). There’s no discussion about drilling into the big cap to attach a hose (which it is apparently designed to optionally do). Using the big cap is not 100% intuitive. It has a locking ring at its base (similar to what you see on a sealed gallon of milk, only larger) and it’s not clear that this must be removed from the cap before you can unscrew the cap again (at least that what it seemed like to me). This cap ring apparently requires a boxcutter or similar sharp tool to remove, once you tighten it down. You can’t do it by “force” as you do when opening a jug of milk where the ring breaks off. I screwed on one cap tight just to see if it leaked and then realized about the locking ring, so I then cut it off as I could see no way to remove the cap otherwise, there’s no “lock release” function. I then cut off the other cap rings before installing them. You do not need the locking ring to get a good tight seal as there is a rubber washer on the inside of the cap which seems to seal well. So to re-state this, cutting off the locking ring does not affect the seal of the cap. The locking ring is apparently intended for “permanent” storage to ensure the lid won’t come loose, that’s all I can think. Again, brief info about this on a sheet of paper enclosed would be helpful.3. Probably my chief complaint is that you cannot easily drain these of water completely. If you turn them upside down, after “emptying” there is water trapped in the “shoulders” which rise above the drain spout (and are below it when the jug is inverted). You have to shake and twist the container to get perhaps the last pint of water out. This design may have been necessary to allow for stacking but perhaps a better design could have gotten around this issue. For example, the typical 5-gal. “jerry can” water containers have their cap at the lowest point when inverted properly though they don’t stack well as these do.4. If priced a little better for the 4-pack I might have only taken off one star. One free spout with each 4-pack would be a nice touch, at 8 dollars the spouts are also overpriced being made of simple plastic and not looking too rugged at that. These containers are adequate for emergency storage but perhaps not quite as good as they could be.

    GOOD VALUE

The build quality of these water storage containers is quite good. Since they are also stackable, this is a winning combination given their cost point. The handle design makes their handling easier especially when you consider the capping system. Our town has above ground storage capability and in the event of a power outage water pressure will be available for a while. Therefore, our containers will be stored dry and filled when needed after washing them out with Sodium Hypochlorite solution before use.

    Fantastic. Product, great company

They arrived in good condition. Came with caps in separate bag and a locking tool so if you are not strong enough you can close and open easily.Filling them is easy but once full they are heavy to lift if you are a woman or senior not strong upper body strength but I made it work. You might bear that in mind if you have to lift out of a sink.I wish it had come with directions and explanations on use. But I wrote them w questions and they responded within a day. There is a small knob w cap that is not pierced and I deduce allows air on for easy water pour out of other big opening or spigot (not included) later. Oh and you can buy a spigot from the company fir about $3-4. I saw a set on Amazon but its not this company brand so id be concerned about proper seal. Also its a more money. I think buying a couple spigots would be a good idea. In case one breaks. (Update: I wrote readystore and they sent me 4 sets as a courtesy..that’s what I call great customer service). As to long term storage. The insides are lined with something that deters algae makes it less likely hence the dark color but they say if you dont treat water ahead you need to change it every 6-8 months. I bought water purification tablets enough for each jug to put in when I’m ready to use it and I will check water at 6 months to see how it smells and I may buy a water tester to check quality. If it needs changing will decuse then.I washed mine out w a little white vinegar and water beforehand and made sure it was well rinsed. They say you can use a little dish soap as well but I preferred no potential suds.As for leaking..I hope the containers hold up. I don’t anticipate leaking of the caps because they are stored upright w cap on top.Theres drought conditions in so many places..thus iui s a good investment. The size is perfect.Highly recommend. But I’ll buy direct from Ready Store next round because Amazon customer service on some food issues was bad and frankly, it ticked me off.

    Solid water storage containers

Product arrived as expected and they seem very solid. Have only stacked two deep so far but should be good for more.

Nice and sturdy but caps a problem

The containers were sturdy and hopefully will be good for storing water for years to come. There is a problem with the sealing them shut after filling. About half leaked when I tipped them sideways. Could be that the threads were not made correctly or that the mouth of the container was warped a tad. In any case, I threaded the caps on about a dozen times and could not seal some of them. Also, the caps are made with a ridiculous ring around its base that has to be cut off if you want to open it up again (think: cap on gallon of milk that leaves a plastic ring loose when you open it). Disappointed.

They are what they appear to be.

I have no major issues with these. They can reasonably be stacked 4 high. Any higher than that seems dangerous. The lids have these locking rigs that are completely useless but you don’t need them anyway. They just fall off. One thing that is very much needed is a way to get the water back out like a spiket or pump. I don’t see anything of reasonable quality for these containers. That’s gonna be inconvenient. 5 gallons of water is pretty heavy.

    Built Well and Stack Well

These containers are stackable when full and light enough to carry around without throwing out your back (about 42 pounds). Mine arrived in perfect condition, but without any instructions. You’ll need to do some drilling of holes if you want to use the spigot, but otherwise you can just tear off the rip ring around the large white caps and screw it on tight by hand. I washed out the insides with a cup of bleach and 5 gallons of water, letting it sit for an hour first, then rinsing it out clean with fresh water. I then refilled with fresh water from the tap and added 1/2 a teaspoon of regular bleach to each 5 gallon container. I plan on doing it again every 6 months.I contacted tankbarn.com about getting extra spigots and a cap wrench and they directed me to Amazon for both:Wrenches: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01DFW937KSpigots: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0172DT2L0Accessory kit with spigot and two caps: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01DFW90GY

    Good product for water storage

Containers seem well made and durable and shipment was fast. Only reason I didn’t give five stars is the breather ports were not drilled for use. I noticed it after cleaning the containers and then had to drill them out before filling. Odd, but not a huge bother.

Quality product. Delivered earlier than scheduled.

Sturdy, quality storage for water. Best value for price. Came with well made bung cap opener and option of either press on cap or threaded bung cap. Delivered one week earlier than scheduled! Number on bottom is a “2” indicating HDPE (high-density polyethylene). Some reviewers claimed different numbers. I got what I expected and what is advertised.

    They stack nicely

Wanted to double my water storage but didn’t want to add to the odd collection of containers I already had (2.5, 5.0 and a 35 gal). These are easily handled and stack beautifully as advertised. Seemed a little pricey but it is what it is.

    Lids leak… like A LOT!!!

The containers seem sturdy, but all 12 lids leak so badly that water POURS out when containers are tipped sideways. We’re talking a stream like pouring soda out of a 2-liter bottle, not just a little drip, drip, drip. I have even attempted to use tools to tighten them more and they still leak just as bad. I can’t even hand carry them without leaving a wet trail from water sloshing out around the lids. I’m moving and transported a couple of them (standing upright) about a mile in the bed of a truck… the truck bed was soaked from sloshing. You can’t tell me this will keep water safe for drinking long term (or even short term)… if that much water can get out, bugs and bacteria can definitely get in! For the record, they have been stored at room temperature (no higher than mid-70s F) on level ground (laminate flooring) and not stacked, with nothing stacked on them. I purchased and filled these over a year ago and didn’t notice the leaking then, but didn’t test them by tipping and probably wouldn’t have noticed sloshing since the containers were already wet from filling and weren’t moved very far. So they may or may not have been leaky from the beginning… I guess I’ll never know. For this high price, I’m absolutely disgusted at the quality of the product I’ve received, but thankful I’ve discovered the issue before an emergency and not after!

    Plastic taste

Can’t believe nobody has said this yet but I did a blind taste test with reverse osmosis water in this container, and reverse osmosis water in a cup. There is an undeniable plastic taste and odor when the water is drank from this container. No matter how short or long the water sits, and even after sitting in rice and 2 additional thorough cleanings, it tastes and smells like this containers plastic. I will not buy anymore to store drinking water, but I can still use these for other water uses.

Great container but no “breathing port”

This is an all around great product with the exception of the “breathing port” which is supposed to be under the small white cap and allow you to let in air while you pour out water. On all 4 of my containers there is no hole here and it’s a solid and thick piece of plastic which I had to gouge with a knife to create a port. If you’re in a similar situation I’d recommend using a drill, as the plastic here is much thicker than any other part of the container.

    Nice design

I like the use of these compact 5 gallon containers for storage of emergency water over that of individual 55 gal drums. I have been using these (stored outside in freezing weather) for a number of years. I like the idea that should it be necessary to transport my water reserves the 5 gallon containers can easily be moved; whereas the is no question the big drums could not be. One downside is ,that being stored outdoors, allows for dirt and leaves to collect in the indented top around the lid; which makes it necessary to be careful when pouring water out of the container.

    They Leak

    1) All four containers leak 2) Security rings on the caps arrived broken so you can’t verify your water’s never been open after sealing. They’ll store water but $127 for leaking containers isn’t worth it.
